Understanding Kaffarah: The Charitable Compensation for Intentionally Broken Fasts in Ramadan 2025

What is Kaffarah?

Kaffarah is a charitable compensation that Muslims must pay for intentionally breaking a fast during the holy month of Ramadan without a valid reason.

Kaffarah for Ramadan 2025

To atone for a deliberately broken fast, you must fast for 60 consecutive days. If you are unable to do so, you should feed 60 poor people at £5 per person (the cost of a typical meal in the UK). This amounts to £300 for each intentionally missed or broken fast.

If you have a valid reason for missing or breaking your fast and cannot make it up later, you must pay fidyah.

Kaffarah for Breaking an Oath

Kaffarah is also required if you break a promise or oath. To redeem yourself, you must ask Allah for forgiveness and pay for feeding 10 people at £5 each. This totals £50 for each broken promise or oath.

Difference Between Kaffarah for a Fast and an Oath

Both Kaffarah for breaking a fast and for breaking an oath involve paying a penalty, but the amounts differ.

  • For each intentionally missed fast, you must pay £300 (feeding 60 people).
  • For each broken oath or promise, you must pay £50 (feeding 10 people).

Difference Between Kaffarah and Fidya

Kaffarah is paid if you deliberately break a fast without a valid reason. In contrast, fidyah is paid when you miss a fast for a valid reason and are unable to make it up later.

  • Kaffarah: The payment for each broken fast is equivalent to feeding 60 people (£300).
  • Fidya: The payment for each missed fast is equivalent to feeding one person (£5).

What is Kaffarah in Islam?

Kaffarah is required for fasts that are deliberately broken during Ramadan.

When Should Kaffarah Be Paid?

Kaffarah can be paid at any time of the year, but it is necessary if you have intentionally broken a fast during Ramadan without a valid reason.
