Bringing Life-Saving Medical Care to Lawat and Shounter Valley

In the heart of Azad Kashmir, nestled near the borders of Astore, Gilgit-Baltistan, lie some of the most isolated communities in the region. These villages, covered in snow during the winter months, are often completely inaccessible for months at a time. Earlier this month, the Kashmir Welfare Foundation successfully completed two medical camps in Lawat and Shounter Valley, reaching over 1,000 patients despite harsh terrain, early winter conditions, and limited road access.

Reaching the Most Remote Corners of Azad Kashmir

Our journey to these remote areas was challenging. Some stretches required hours of hiking, while others could only be navigated by 4×4 vehicles due to treacherous, narrow mountain roads. Yet, the team’s determination to reach those most in need never wavered.

These are areas where medical facilities are virtually non-existent, and without intervention, preventable illnesses can quickly become life-threatening.

Facing Harsh Conditions to Serve Vulnerable Communities

As winter approached, temperatures dropped, and early snow began appearing on the peaks. The cold weather made access to these regions even more difficult, but our mission to deliver urgent healthcare and humanitarian aid was stronger than ever.

During the camps, our medical teams encountered a wide range of health issues. Many patients suffered from skin conditions, especially scabies, caused by poor hygiene and limited access to clean water.

We also treated individuals with heart-related issues, bone and joint problems, and infected injuries, which had worsened over time due to lack of nearby medical facilities. By providing medication of international standards, our teams ensured that every patient received proper and effective care.

Medical Camps: A Lifeline for Remote Communities

Over the course of these camps, more than 1,000 patients were treated across the two locations. Our services included health check-ups, vaccinations, treatment for infections, chronic conditions, skin problems, and first aid, alongside health education and hygiene awareness programs.

These medical camps are more than just treatment centers, they are a lifeline. By reaching the most isolated villages near Astore and Shounter Valley, we provided hope and support to families who had never had access to quality healthcare.

The camps also offered guidance on preventive care, helping communities protect themselves long after our teams leave.

Challenges Overcome: Terrain, Weather, and Accessibility

Reaching these areas was no easy feat. Some villages could only be accessed after a grueling hike of several hours, while others required 4×4 vehicles to navigate mountainous roads. The team carried medical supplies, essential medications, and equipment across challenging terrain to ensure no patient was left untreated.

Despite the difficulties, the success of these camps demonstrates the resilience of our team and the importance of humanitarian aid in Azad Kashmir. Their dedication ensured that vulnerable communities received timely, life-saving medical support, even in the remotest corners of the region.

Honouring the Heroes Behind the Medical Camps

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Saqib (Kel) and Dr. Shabir (Athmuqam) for their tireless effort and expertise in treating patients under challenging conditions. Our volunteers also went above and beyond, hiking difficult trails and working in extreme weather to ensure these medical camps reached those in poorest and most inaccessible areas of Azad Kashmir.

Their dedication reflects the core values of the Kashmir Welfare Foundation: service, compassion, and the belief that every individual deserves access to quality healthcare.

The Importance of Sustained Medical Aid in Azad Kashmir

The completion of these camps highlights a critical reality: remote communities in Azad Kashmir remain underserved. Seasonal illnesses, infections, and chronic conditions often go untreated due to the absence of local clinics.

Medical camps like these are essential to prevent health crises and save lives, especially in regions prone to natural disasters, harsh winters, and limited infrastructure.

By providing Kashmir emergency relief, medical care, and education, we ensure that families have access to the healthcare they need to thrive, regardless of where they live.
