Zakat FAQ
1. What is Zakat and why is it important in Islam?
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, a compulsory form of charity that purifies wealth and helps those in need. It supports the poor, orphans, and vulnerable communities, ensuring social justice and economic balance.
2. Who is eligible to receive Zakat in Kashmir?
In Kashmir, Zakat can be given to orphans, widows, refugees, families affected by poverty, medical patients, and disaster victims. It must go to those who fall under the eight categories mentioned in the Qur’an (Surah At-Tawbah 9:60).
3. How do I calculate my Zakat correctly?
To calculate Zakat, you need to total your cash, gold, silver, savings, investments, and business assets, then subtract debts. If the amount exceeds the Nisab, Zakat is 2.5% of the total wealth held for one lunar year.
Use our Zakat Calculator for an accurate and easy calculation.
4. What is the current Nisab value for Zakat?
The Nisab value is based on the price of 612.36g of silver or 87.48g of gold. For example if using silver and 1g costs £0.60 → Nisab = £367.41. If using gold and 1g costs £50 → Nisab = £4,374.
Muslims can choose which standard to follow based on their local community and circumstances.
5. Can I give my Zakat to Kashmir Welfare Foundation?
Yes, you can give Zakat to Kashmir Welfare Foundation. We ensure your Zakat goes directly to food, clean water, education, medical aid, and emergency relief projects for those most in need across Kashmir and beyond.
6. What is the difference between Zakat and Sadaqah?
Zakat is obligatory and has specific rules on who gives and receives it. Sadaqah is voluntary charity given at any time, for any amount, to anyone in need. Both bring immense blessings, but Zakat is a required duty for eligible Muslims.
7. How often should Zakat be paid?
Zakat is due once a year, based on the lunar (Hijri) year. It becomes payable when your wealth has been above the Nisab threshold for a full lunar year. Many Muslims choose Ramadan to pay their Zakat for extra blessings.
