The Significance of Qurbani in Kashmir: Providing Meat and Hope to Disadvantaged Families
The Significance of Qurbani in Kashmir
Qurbani, or the act of sacrifice, holds great importance in Islam and is highly encouraged by Allah (SWT). While it is recommended to divide the qurbani between oneself, family, friends, and those in need, many Muslims choose to have their qurbani performed in vulnerable communities around the world. At Kashmir Welfare Foundation, we offer a Qurbani program that aims to provide meat, an essential resource, to thousands of disadvantaged families in Azad Kashmir.
How Does the Kashmir Qurbani Program Work?
When you donate your Qurbani through Kashmir Welfare Foundation, we ensure that all three parts of the sacrifice are distributed to those in need. Your qurbani donation becomes the sole source of meat for many families in Azad Kashmir. With the support of generous donors like you, in 2023, Kashmir Welfare Foundation was able to carry out over 200 Qurbanis, benefiting 13,000 people in Kashmir.
The Cost of Qurbani in Kashmir
The cost of qurbani in Kashmir is £70 per share, £490 for a whole animal (cow or buffalo, which consists of 7 shares), and £160 for a small animal (one share).

Performing Qurbani in Kashmir
It is crucial to ensure that the slaughter is carried out humanely and in accordance with qurbani rules. At Kashmir Welfare Foundation, each of our field offices across Kashmir takes careful measures to ensure the animals are slaughtered locally and humanely. Some of the rules that should be followed include:
- Using a sharp knife for the sacrifice to minimise pain and suffering
- Avoiding sharpening knives in front of the sacrificial animal
- Not slaughtering an animal in front of another animal
- Reciting the words “Bismillah Allahu Akbar” during the sacrifice
- Waiting for the animal’s body to cool down before skinning it
Distributing Qurbani Meat in Kashmir
Our Kashmir Welfare Foundation field office in Kashmir sources and purchases local livestock, ensuring that the qurbani is carried out according to Islamic guidelines. After the animal has been sacrificed, the meat is distributed to those in need. In case of any issues with livestock supply in Kashmir, such as limited local supply or natural disasters, we work with our partners in Pakistan to transport the meat to the affected areas of Kashmir.
We mainly target hard to reach areas of Kashmir, especially in the Eastern and Northern areas where tough landscapes make it difficult for charities to work or distribute meat in these areas. We use a team of local people who know these regions well to assist with distributions.
Making a Difference in Kashmir
Every day, the poorest communities in Kashmir face dire living conditions. The meat received through generous qurbani donations may be the only source of meat they consume throughout the year. Your qurbani donations have a powerful impact, providing not only a source of livelihood but also bringing families together during the festive days of Eid al-Adha. Your sacrifice makes a significant difference in the lives of families in need.
Donate your qurbani to Kashmir Welfare Foundation today and make a lasting impact on the lives of those in Kashmir’s most vulnerable communities.
