Imagine being a young girl in Kashmir, walking miles each day under the hot sun, carrying heavy clay pots of water for your family. Every step is exhausting, yet you keep going because your family depends on you. This was the reality for many women in Kashmir, including my mother.
Even today, when my mother speaks about her childhood, her eyes fill with tears. She remembers the hardship, but she also remembers the strength of her community. “We didn’t have much, but we had each other.” Those words shaped our values of resilience, compassion, and service.
Like many of the founders of Kashmir Welfare Foundation, we grew up hearing these stories from our mothers and grandmothers. They are the reason this charity exists.
As British Kashmiris, we may not have lived those struggles ourselves, but we carry their legacy. Today, we have the opportunity and responsibility to support communities in Kashmir and create lasting change.
