They sleep outside. Under open skies. In harsh weather. With no protection for their children. Every night is uncertainty. Every sound brings fear. This is not living. This is surviving.

The Night the Roof Fell In

Huzaifa remembers the sound. A deep crack. Then silence. Then everything collapsed.

It was night. His children were asleep. Under that very roof. The ceiling gave way. Falling into the room where his son and daughter lay. By Allah’s mercy, they survived. But nothing was the same after that.

Huzaifa is a farm labourer. Work is not guaranteed. Income is uncertain. He tried to repair the damage.

But each earthquake made things worse. Cracks spread across the walls. Weakness grew in the structure. Then last year two walls gave way. Now, the family no longer sleeps inside. They are too afraid.

Huzaifa, his wife, his three children and his elderly parents are all sleeping outside. Exposed to:

Cold nights
Rain
Uncertainty

And, every night, they ask the same question:

“Will we be safe?”
