Cloudbursts occur when warm, moisture-laden air rises rapidly over mountainous terrain. As the air cools, large storm clouds develop and release intense rainfall in a concentrated area. Kashmir's mountain ranges naturally enhance this process, making certain valleys more vulnerable to sudden extreme weather events.
Scientists believe climate change is contributing to more frequent and intense extreme weather events across South Asia. While cloudbursts have always occurred, many experts suggest that rising temperatures and changing weather patterns may be increasing the severity of heavy rainfall events in Kashmir and neighbouring regions.
