Access to healthcare in Azad Kashmir remains a significant challenge, especially in remote districts such as Haveli and Sudhnoti. In response to this urgent need, Kashmir Welfare Foundation, a leading Kashmir humanitarian organisation UK, organised medical camps in these districts to deliver international-standard healthcare to the people who need it the most.
LOC (Line of Control) Medical Camps
Our medical camps were designed to reach the most isolated communities, including villages located near the Line of Control (LOC) and regions bordering Astore, Gilgit Baltistan, which are often inaccessible during the harsh winter months. The terrain in these areas is challenging, with narrow roads, steep hills, and sometimes fully snow-covered paths.
Despite these obstacles, our dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and volunteers hiked for hours and navigated treacherous routes using 4×4 vehicles to ensure that patients received life-saving treatment.
Over the course of the two medical camps, our teams successfully treated 890 patients, addressing a wide range of health issues. Common conditions included breathing difficulties, chest pains, muscle and joint pains, infections, and skin-related ailments such as scabies.
Many of these conditions arise from limited access to hygiene facilities and the scarcity of medical care in these regions. For residents of Sudhnoti, some clinics exist but are often under-equipped and unable to provide essential medications or treatments. Haveli, being closer to the LOC, has even fewer healthcare resources, making the presence of these medical camps critical.
Reaching the Most Vulnerable
The logistics of reaching these remote areas were challenging. Some villages were only accessible after hours of hiking through mountainous terrain, while others required 4×4 vehicles to traverse rugged roads. Winter was approaching, and the early cold made travel even more difficult. Yet, the warmth and gratitude of the communities we served made every effort worthwhile. Patients of all ages, from children to the elderly, waited patiently for medical care that many had never received before.
Our teams brought not only expertise but also international-standard medication, ensuring that treatments were safe, effective, and suitable for the most vulnerable populations. Every patient received personalised care, including diagnosis, prescription medication, and follow-up guidance.
The goal of our camps is not only to treat immediate conditions but also to provide education on preventive healthcare and hygiene practices to help reduce future illnesses.
