A Time of Grief for Our Nation
Across Azad Jammu and Kashmir, communities are once again facing uncertainty, tension and heartbreak. Recent weeks have witnessed some of the largest public demonstrations seen in the region in recent years. Streets that would normally be filled with families, traders and schoolchildren have instead become gathering places for protestors, security personnel and growing public concern.
For many Kashmiris, these events are about more than politics. They are about representation, dignity, accountability and the future direction of the region. For others, they are about preserving stability, public order and constitutional arrangements that have existed for decades. Different people hold different views, and reasonable people may disagree on the solutions.
Yet above every political argument, legal debate or constitutional question stands a far more important reality.
Lives have been lost.
Families have been shattered.
Communities have been left grieving.
No matter where one stands on the issues being debated, every Kashmiri heart feels the weight of that loss.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.
Beyond Politics: The Human Cost of Unrest
News reports often focus on numbers. The number of protestors on the streets. The number of security personnel deployed. The number of arrests made. The number of injuries recorded. The number of lives lost. Statistics are important because they help us understand the scale of events, but numbers alone can never tell the full story.
Behind every figure is a human being. Behind every casualty report is a family whose life has changed forever. A son who left home believing he would return that evening. A father whose children now face a future without his guidance and protection. A mother waiting for a phone call that will never come. A brother, sister or friend struggling to understand how an ordinary day became a tragedy.
Among those affected are also police officers and security personnel who left their families to fulfil their duties. Many are fathers, sons and brothers themselves. They too have loved ones who wait anxiously for them to return home safely. When unrest turns violent, the consequences reach far beyond those directly involved and spread through entire communities.
There are also countless stories that never make the headlines. The young volunteer who believed they were standing up for their community. The shopkeeper forced to close their business during uncertain days. The student whose education has been disrupted. The elderly patient unable to reach medical treatment. The worker who loses a week’s income because roads are closed and businesses are shut. These are the hidden costs that often go unnoticed.
The true cost of unrest cannot be measured solely by political gains or losses, nor by the outcome of negotiations and debates. Its impact is felt in empty chairs around dinner tables, in grieving families struggling to cope with loss, in interrupted education, lost livelihoods and communities carrying emotional wounds long after the crowds have dispersed.
Years from now, many people may forget the speeches, slogans and political arguments that dominated the headlines. What families will remember, however, is the loved one who never came home. They will remember the fear, the uncertainty and the pain. That is why the preservation of human life must remain the highest priority for everyone involved. No political objective, however important, should come at the cost of unnecessary bloodshed.
As Kashmir reflects on these difficult events, we must remind ourselves that every life lost is a loss for all of us. Every family left grieving is part of our wider community. Every injury, every funeral and every tear shed weakens the social fabric that binds us together. If there is one lesson to be learned from these events, it is that dialogue, restraint and respect for human dignity must always prevail over confrontation and violence.
Why People Are Taking to the Streets
It would be wrong to dismiss the concerns of ordinary citizens. They are valid. The protests are justified. There is logic behind the demands. Across Azad Jammu and Kashmir, many people have genuine frustrations regarding governance, economic pressures, public services, accountability and political representation. These concerns have been discussed for years in homes, marketplaces, universities and community gatherings.
Many of those participating in demonstrations believe they are exercising their right to peacefully express concerns regarding issues that affect their daily lives and the future of their children.
History shows that peaceful civic participation has often been an important driver of positive change around the world. Citizens who engage peacefully with public affairs play a vital role in strengthening society and encouraging accountability.
At the same time, public protest carries responsibilities. Demonstrations must remain peaceful. Public property must be protected. Violence must never become a substitute for dialogue. The legitimacy of any movement is strengthened when it remains disciplined, peaceful and respectful of human life.
The Responsibility of Those in Authority
Governments face difficult challenges during periods of protests, but its important they take steps to open dialogue and work towards a solution. Public officials have a duty to maintain order, protect communities and prevent violence. These responsibilities become even more complex when tensions rise and emotions run high.
However, the preservation of public order must always be balanced with respect for human dignity, civil liberties and the protection of life. Around the world, history repeatedly demonstrates that lasting stability is rarely achieved through force alone. Sustainable peace emerges when citizens feel heard, institutions are trusted and dialogue remains open.
Periods of unrest often provide an opportunity for reflection. They allow governments to listen more carefully to public concerns, strengthen communication with communities and build confidence through transparency and engagement. The strongest societies are not those that silence disagreement, but those that manage disagreement peacefully.
The Importance of Dialogue
Kashmir has experienced more than its fair share of conflict, uncertainty and political tension throughout its history. Every generation has faced challenges that tested its resilience, unity and ability to endure hardship. While circumstances may change over time, one lesson continues to emerge from every difficult chapter: lasting solutions are rarely achieved through confrontation alone.
For that reason, dialogue remains essential. Dialogue does not require people to abandon deeply held beliefs, nor does it require anyone to surrender their principles or concerns. Instead, it requires something far simpler, yet often far more difficult: a willingness to listen. Progress becomes possible when people choose conversation over confrontation and understanding over assumption.
When communication breaks down, mistrust begins to grow. Communities become divided, rumours replace facts, and people begin to view one another as opponents rather than fellow citizens. As mistrust deepens, tensions inevitably rise. When tensions rise, it is ordinary people who pay the greatest price. Families are disrupted, businesses suffer, public services are affected and communities become trapped in cycles of uncertainty.
The people of Kashmir deserve better than endless rounds of disagreement followed by unrest. They deserve leadership that listens, citizens who engage peacefully and institutions that encourage meaningful dialogue. Most importantly, they deserve solutions that are reached through discussion, consultation and mutual respect rather than conflict and division.
The future of Kashmir will not be built by those who shout the loudest, but by those willing to sit together, listen carefully and work towards common ground. Dialogue may not solve every problem overnight, but it remains the most effective path towards lasting peace, stability and understanding.
The Role of the Media and the Importance of Open Communication
Periods of unrest place an enormous responsibility upon the media. Journalists and news organisations become the primary source of information for millions of people seeking to understand what is happening around them. Unfortunately, during moments of tension, reporting can sometimes become selective, incomplete or influenced by political narratives. Some reports focus heavily on the actions of protestors while overlooking the concerns that brought people onto the streets, this is more visiable today more than ever.
The result is often a divided public, with different groups consuming entirely different versions of the same events. In such an environment, rumours spread quickly, misinformation flourishes and trust begins to erode. This is why balanced, accurate and responsible reporting is more important than ever. The people of Kashmir deserve facts rather than propaganda, transparency rather than speculation, and journalism that seeks understanding rather than division.
Equally concerning is the continued disruption of internet and communication services during periods of unrest. While authorities may cite security concerns, prolonged communication blackouts carry significant humanitarian consequences. Families become unable to contact loved ones. Students lose access to education. Businesses suffer financial losses. Patients struggle to obtain medical information and emergency assistance. Humanitarian organisations face additional challenges coordinating relief efforts and responding to those in need.
The internet has become an essential part of modern life. It is not merely a tool for communication but a lifeline connecting families, businesses, healthcare services and communities. Restricting access for extended periods risks punishing entire populations, including those with no involvement in protests or unrest.
The Kashmir Welfare Foundation therefore respectfully calls for the restoration of internet and communication services as soon as possible. Open communication helps reduce fear, counter misinformation and build public confidence. Transparency is often one of the most effective tools for reducing tension and preventing rumours from escalating into further conflict.
A peaceful and stable society depends upon informed citizens. Access to information, responsible journalism and open communication are not obstacles to peace; they are essential foundations upon which trust, accountability and lasting stability are built.
Humanity Before Politics
At the Kashmir Welfare Foundation, we believe that humanity must always come before politics. This principle is not merely a slogan; it is the foundation upon which our work is built. It guides every project we undertake, every family we support and every emergency response we deliver.
During times of unrest, it can become easy to see people through the lens of political positions, affiliations or disagreements. Yet when we look beyond those divisions, we see something far more important. The protestor standing in the street is one of our people. The police officer standing on duty is one of our people. The soldier deployed far from home is one of our people. The doctor treating casualties is one of our people. The child unable to attend school because of disruption is one of our people. The elderly patient struggling to access healthcare is one of our people.
Each of these individuals has a family that loves them, a future they hope to build and a life that carries equal value in the eyes of Allah. Their humanity does not change because of a uniform, a political opinion or a role they happen to fulfil during a difficult moment in history.
When tragedy strikes, compassion should never be conditional. Humanity does not ask about political affiliation before offering help. It does not ask which side someone supports before providing medical care. Pain does not recognise political boundaries, and grief does not distinguish between civilian clothing and official uniforms. The tears of a mother mourning her child are the same regardless of background, status or belief.
This is why the Kashmir Welfare Foundation remains committed to serving all people without discrimination. We believe that every life matters, every family deserves dignity and every person deserves compassion. In times of peace and in times of crisis, our responsibility remains unchanged: to stand with humanity first.
Loss is loss. Suffering is suffering. And every life lost is a loss for Kashmir.
Kashmir Welfare Foundation’s Humanitarian Response
While public attention has understandably focused on political developments, negotiations and the evolving security situation, another story has quietly unfolded across the valleys, towns and communities of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. It is a story not of politics, but of service. Not of division, but of compassion. Not of conflict, but of humanity.
As tensions increased and uncertainty spread across the region, the Kashmir Welfare Foundation mobilised its healthcare teams to support communities affected by the unrest. Our organisation has deployed four mobile medical camps across multiple locations, including areas situated near demonstrations and locations experiencing heightened security activity. The objective has been simple: to ensure that those requiring medical assistance are able to access treatment regardless of the circumstances around them.
Our mission has remained unchanged from the day the foundation was established. We exist to serve humanity.
Over recent days, our doctors, nurses, pharmacists and volunteers have provided free medical consultations, health assessments, medicines and emergency support to hundreds of people. Many patients have arrived with routine medical needs unrelated to the unrest, while others have required treatment after being caught up in difficult and stressful circumstances. Regardless of the reason they seek assistance, every individual is treated with the same dignity, respect and compassion.
The Kashmir Welfare Foundation does not ask people about their political opinions before offering medical care. We do not ask which side of a debate they support. We do not ask whether they are a protestor, a police officer, a member of the armed forces, a journalist, a volunteer or a civilian. Human suffering does not recognise political boundaries, and neither should humanitarian assistance.
If someone requires treatment, we treat them. If someone is injured, we assist them. If someone is suffering, we do our best to ease that suffering. This is not simply an organisational policy; it is a moral obligation rooted in our values, our faith and our commitment to humanity.
Throughout Kashmir’s history, communities have repeatedly demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity. Neighbours have helped neighbours. Strangers have assisted strangers. People have come together during earthquakes, floods, landslides and times of hardship. The current situation should be no different. Moments of tension should strengthen our commitment to compassion, not weaken it.
The work of our medical teams serves as a reminder that even during difficult times, humanity remains stronger than division. Every patient treated is a reminder that beneath political disagreements, we remain one people, sharing the same valleys, the same communities and the same hopes for a peaceful future.
A Call for Restraint
As tensions continue across parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, the Kashmir Welfare Foundation respectfully calls upon all parties to exercise maximum restraint and place the protection of human life above all other considerations.
We urge protestors to maintain the peaceful and disciplined approach that has characterised the vast majority of public demonstrations. The right to express concerns and participate in civic affairs is strengthened when it is exercised responsibly, peacefully and with respect for the safety of others. Violence, destruction and confrontation risk undermining legitimate concerns and ultimately harm the very communities seeking positive change.
We also call upon community leaders, religious scholars, elders and civil society representatives to continue promoting calm, dialogue and responsible engagement. During periods of heightened tension, trusted local voices play a crucial role in preventing misunderstandings, reducing fear and encouraging constructive solutions.
At the same time, we respectfully urge the relevant authorities to prioritise dialogue, de-escalation and measures that build public confidence. Efforts that reduce tension, improve communication and encourage meaningful engagement are far more likely to produce lasting stability than measures that deepen mistrust or increase confrontation.
We further call for the restoration of communication channels and internet services as soon as conditions safely permit. Open communication helps families remain connected, enables businesses to function, supports humanitarian operations and reduces the spread of misinformation that often flourishes during periods of uncertainty.
Every effort should be made to avoid further loss of life. Every effort should be made to protect civilians. Every effort should be made to create opportunities for dialogue rather than confrontation.
The future of Kashmir cannot be built upon grief, anger and division. It must be built upon understanding, dignity and mutual respect. The people of Kashmir deserve solutions that bring communities together rather than pull them apart.
The Need for Healing
Even when demonstrations eventually conclude and media attention moves elsewhere, the impact of these events will continue to be felt by countless families across Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
For those who have lost loved ones, the pain will not disappear when the headlines fade. Families will continue carrying grief. Children will continue asking questions. Parents will continue mourning sons and daughters. Communities will continue processing events that have left emotional and psychological scars.
Beyond the immediate human loss, there are also broader social consequences. Businesses affected by disruption will take time to recover. Students whose education has been interrupted will work to regain lost opportunities. Workers who have lost income will continue facing financial pressures. Communities that have experienced tension and uncertainty will need time to rebuild confidence and trust.
True recovery requires more than political agreements or administrative decisions. It requires compassion. It requires accountability. It requires transparency. It requires a willingness from all sides to learn lessons and prevent future tragedies.
Healing also requires recognising our shared humanity. Every family affected by these events deserves dignity, support and understanding. No community benefits when grief becomes a source of further division.
Perhaps the greatest responsibility rests with the current generation. The decisions made today will shape the Kashmir inherited by future generations. We must ensure that our children inherit a society built upon dialogue rather than confrontation, understanding rather than hostility and hope rather than fear.
The greatest tribute that can be paid to those who have suffered is a collective commitment to ensuring that future disagreements are resolved peacefully and that no more families experience the pain that has touched so many communities in recent weeks.
Our Prayer for Kashmir
Today, our thoughts remain with every family affected by these difficult events. We remember those who have lost their lives, those who have been injured and those who continue to carry the burden of grief and uncertainty.
We pray for the families mourning loved ones and ask Allah to grant them patience, strength and comfort during their time of loss. We pray for those recovering from injuries and ask Allah to grant them complete healing and recovery.
We pray for the safety of all citizens, healthcare workers, emergency responders, volunteers, police officers and security personnel who continue to serve their communities during this challenging period. We pray that they are protected from harm and guided towards actions that preserve life and promote peace.
We pray for wisdom among leaders, restraint among all parties and a sincere commitment to dialogue over confrontation. We pray that hearts are softened, tensions are reduced and understanding prevails over division.
Above all, we pray that peace returns swiftly to every town, village and valley of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. May our communities be protected from further hardship. May justice be accompanied by compassion. May differences be resolved through dialogue. And may the people of Kashmir move forward together with unity, dignity and hope.
May Allah protect our people, heal our communities, strengthen our unity and guide us towards justice, compassion and lasting peace.
Ameen.
Humanity First. Politics Second.
Our volunteers do not ask who someone supports. We simply provide healthcare, food and clean water to those affected by the current unrest.
