Ramadan is a time of devotion, fasting, and self-reflection. But for some, fasting is not possible. The elderly, the sick, and those with long-term illnesses often watch their loved ones observe fasts while they are unable to join in. Others break their fast without a valid reason and feel the weight of their mistake on their hearts.
What happens then? Is there a way to compensate? Yes! Through Fidya and Kaffarah.
Both are forms of charity, but they are given in different situations—one for those who physically cannot fast, and the other as a penalty for breaking a fast deliberately.
What is Fidya in 2025?
Fidya is a donation given by those who cannot fast due to a valid reason—like chronic illness, old age, or a permanent medical condition. Since they cannot make up for their missed fasts later, they give Fidya to feed a needy person for each missed fast.
📌 Example: An elderly woman in Azad Kashmir, suffering from diabetes, cannot fast. She gives Fidya to provide meals for the poor, ensuring she still benefits from the blessings of Ramadan.
📌 Current Fidya Rate: It varies each year, but it is generally enough to feed a poor person two meals per day for each missed fast. Currently in Kashmir, this stands at £2.50 per meal. Meaning that one person can be fed twice, for £5 per day. The total of Fidya for the full 30 days will be £150.
💖 Through Fidya, those who cannot fast still earn rewards while ensuring the poor don’t go hungry.
What is Kaffarah in 2025?
Kaffarah is a penalty for intentionally breaking a fast without a valid reason. Since Ramadan fasting is an obligation, breaking it without a valid excuse requires a serious act of repentance. Kaffarah currently stands at £300 per missed fast. This is calculated by multiplying the daily cost of cooked food, which is £2.50 per meal, or £5 per day. We then multiply this again by 60 days.
📌 How to compensate?
1️⃣ Fast for 60 consecutive days
2️⃣ If unable to do this, feed 60 needy people
📌 Example: A young man deliberately eats during Ramadan without a valid excuse. To seek forgiveness, he donates Kaffarah, feeding 60 hungry individuals and making sincere repentance.
💖 Kaffarah is not just about making up for the mistake—it is about transforming guilt into an act of compassion and change.
The Impact of Fidya & Kaffarah: Real Stories from Kashmir
A Widow’s Struggle & The Gift of Fidya
Fatima Bibi, a widow in Kashmir, has struggled to feed her children since her husband passed away. With no source of income, she often went days with little food.
Last Ramadan, a kind donor gave Fidya, allowing Fatima and her children to have proper meals every day. While the donor couldn’t fast due to illness, their contribution ensured another family didn’t sleep hungry.
🌟 Your Fidya can change lives, giving dignity and nourishment to those in need.
Kaffarah: A Lesson in Redemption
A young man from the UK admitted to breaking a fast deliberately and feeling overwhelmed with guilt. Seeking forgiveness, he paid Kaffarah through Kashmir Welfare Foundation, feeding 60 struggling families.
The impact? More than just fulfilling an obligation—he gave people food, hope, and a reason to make dua for him.
🌟 Your Kaffarah isn’t just about making up for a mistake—it’s a second chance to bring change to others’ lives.
