Establish WaqfKotli District, the most populous region of Azad Jammu & Kashmir, lies between Mirpur and Sudhanoti. Once a quiet agricultural zone, it has rapidly transformed into a commercial and educational centre supported by strong diaspora ties — especially from the UK and Middle East. Despite progress, unplanned urban growth, deforestation and flooding remain major challenges.
Kotli’s history traces back to the Dogra era when it was a regional trading town. Post-1947, it became one of AJK’s key administrative hubs and home to a large portion of the Kashmiri diaspora abroad. It remains a centre for remittances, small industries and cross-border trade links.
The district has strong educational infrastructure, including the University of Kotli and several colleges. Remittances from overseas Kashmiris have supported the construction of schools, mosques and clinics. However, water management, waste disposal and road safety remain key urban challenges.
Rapid expansion and environmental degradation have put pressure on resources — especially water and arable land.
