It is the region’s political, cultural and administrative heart, yet remains one of the most disaster-prone districts due to its location on major fault lines.
Muzaffarabad has been a historic crossroads between the Kashmir Valley and northern Punjab for centuries. Named after Sultan Muzaffar Khan, it grew into a strategic trade hub and later the capital of Azad Jammu & Kashmir in 1947. The district suffered immense devastation in the 2005 earthquake, which reshaped its infrastructure and emergency planning.
Home to the University of Azad Jammu & Kashmir and multiple colleges, Muzaffarabad has the region’s best educational institutions. However, rural literacy and access lag behind urban areas. Reconstruction after the 2005 quake has improved schools, but healthcare and sanitation remain unevenly distributed.
Despite being the capital, Muzaffarabad faces high seismic risk, rapid unplanned urbanisation and fragile road infrastructure connecting surrounding valleys.
